EliteXC facing sudden death? Is Tito Ortiz going to sign on?

A good article from NowPublic.com has some insights into the future of EliteXC and the Kimbo Slice scandal.

Even innocent, the management of Elite XC is left facing a very ugly reality: Kimbo Slice the star they banked heavily upon to drive the ratings succeeded in drawing over 4-million CBS viewers; all of whom witnessed the destruction of said star in a mere 14-seconds at the hands of a relatively unknown, last minute challenger; A man with a solid-but-not-stellar skill set; A man with no fan following and limited marketability.

Already deep in the red, Elite XC doesn’t have the time to build up a new star to carry the organization.  Innocent they may be, but doomed nonetheless.

In the end it all works out the same.  Whether management sought to influence the bout or not, Petruzelli’s quick KO of Kimbo was the final nail required to secure the lid on the struggling promotion’s coffin.

Tito Ortiz had indicated that he was a week away from a deal - almost two weeks ago.  No news since.  I think he’s planning on backing out, and we’ll see EliteXC go the way of the dodo.

EliteXC told Petruzelli to let Kimbo win

From Monsters in the Morning 104.1 FM comes an astonishing revalation by Petruzelli:

Seth Petruzelli: My original plan was to throw a lot of push kicks, they’re called teeps…have him think that I’m going to throw ‘em to try to rush in more, and then shoot in on him, obviously…I knew I would do alright standing up with him. The promoters kinda hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn’t want me to take him down. Let’s just put it that way. It was worth my while to try and stand up and punch with him.

For those of you who were paying attention, you’ll remember that Kimbo couldn’t even win a fixed fight, going down in 14-seconds.

Kimbo Slice earned $35,714 per second at EliteXC’s Oct. 4th Event

Top payouts went to Andrei Arlovski and Kimbo Slice in the October 4th’s EliteXC event, each receiving $500,000 from their time in the ring.  Shockingly, Kimbo negotiated an increase in his pay after Ken Shamrock backed-out with the cut eye, and was paid a whopping $35,714.29 per second for his work in the ring.

Seth Petruzelli also received an increase.  Total disclosed fighter payout from the event was $1,319,000.  Some of the toughest fighters received some of the least money, and surprisingly Roy Nelson made more than Gina Carano - and she’s one of EliteXC’s biggest draws.

Kimbo vs. Shamrock, EliteXC tonight on CBS at 6PM EST

vs.

Kimbo Slice

While many fighters in MMA have paid their dues in the gym, Kimbo Slice paid his on the street by fighting for cash in unsanctioned street fights, many of which were filmed and distributed via the Internet on YouTube.

Through the power of the Internet, Slice went from being an anonymous backyard brawler to being a multi-media superstar almost seemingly overnight. With a rabid fan base that was growing exponentially, many of Slice’s fans would go to mixed martial arts message boards proposing “dream matches” against legitimate fighters from the world of sanctioned fighting. Slice’s legend grew and promoters became intrigued by the idea of luring him into MMA.

Kimbo now trains full time under renowned fighter and coach, Bas Rutten, who has transformed him into a professional mix martial artist on his pursuit to become EliteXC Heavyweight champion.

MMA Record: 3-0

Shamrock is ranked 89th, and currently has a MMA Record: W-26, L-12, D-2Shamrock is a founding father of MMA,  was the first UFC Superfight Champion and the first King of Pancrase in MMA . The UFC Superfight Championship was eventually merged into the UFC Heavyweight Championship , so it can be said that Shamrock was the UFC’s first Heavyweight Champion. He was also the NWA World Heavyweight Champion in TNA, and the 1998 King of the Ring as well as a one-time Intercontinental Champion the WWF.

Shamrock has had a series of losses since 2005, and his age is a major concern.

What’s your prediction?  Can Kimbo’s build-up really stand the hype?  Is this Shamrock’s swan song?

Most Overrated MMA Fighters?

There is a great post over at MMAjunkie.com talking about some of the Most Overrated MMA Fighters.

Thinking with a clear head, Eric Foster summizes the basics with his fair criticism of Ortiz:

None of this is meant to criticize Ortiz, and if he is your favorite fighter, the last thing I am trying to do is change your personal preference. I merely point out that Ortiz’s reputation as a fighter and his popularity with the fans has outpaced the quality of his wins. As a result, he has been overrated from a gambling perspective several times in his career, including in his past three fights. And, assuming Ortiz returns to the cage (or the ring) sometime soon, expect his line to be artificially inflated due to his popularity with the fans.

He goes on to give his opinion of Frank Mir, Matt Serra, and Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson.

It’s worth a read, check out the whole article here.
